April 2006 K9 Search and
Rescue Training
April 2006 we all got together for a wilderness
rescue school. Josef was here from Slovakia so he
joined us with Nuky. Our dogs had no experience but
they are all good trackers. We had several days of
class room and controlled work. On the final day,
Malinda sent us out in 150 acres of cactus and
snakes and burs and said "go find the missing kid."
We were given a description of the child and that
was it. I really felt panic! I am not ready and
neither is my dog, HELP...!!
BUT, Bruna took
off when I gave her the command and started
searching. I was shocked so I started following her
and in a second I saw her nose go up and she started
running FULL Blast. What an exhilarating feeling. I
could not believe it. She actually understood what I
had been teaching her. WOW...!!
Malinda told us
that the hardest thing is to trust your dog and I
can definitely see that. It is a total loss of
control feeling when they take off. Nuky took off in
a dead run and a rabbit jumped up
and I thought we were history but he kept on track
and had the fastest find of the day. Josef is MR.
Calm and Confident since he has won so much in SNOW
Rescue...!!
We all had a
great time and thanks to Malinda Julien at USTK9 for
the wonderful instruction.
We had a blast at this

Dux
Hello Taunya,
Here are some pictures of Dux that Frances wanted you to have as she put it,
"for your gallery of happy placements!".
She labeled the first "You want me to do what?? The second is of the crate that
opens up to an outside 10" x 6" run. She thought he was old enough to have a
crate pad...WRONG! The third is a beautiful snow shot and the group one is with
his housemates Roq and Ava. Ava, the small bitch in the middle, is her trailing
SAR dog.
She describes Dux in her note:
"Dux is....well Dux. Truly a unique guy. Really he's almost clairvoyant and an
annoying puppy. Dux and I are doing fine- he is a lot of dog? Love him! Smart!"
She is so happy with him and you really sent her a wonderful dog!!!!!!

Just wanted to say Hi and send some current pictures of Octane. He is doing
great with his Obedience training and puppy searches. I haven’t put any kind of

Falko update
3 weeks in and he is doing great! When he came
off the plane he was confident, friendly and went right for the toy. Those
characteristics have only continued to come out. He does great with any helper,
has a great start on focus work and is maneuvering chain link and any other
agility obstacles I can expose him too with ease. He is showing all the
potential in the world to grow up to be a great SAR dog! And although completely
irrelevant to his work...he is a very handsome dog! Will keep you posted.

update on Eric (aka Juice)
Hi Taunya,
Just wanted to let you know that Eric is doing spectacular. He had another great
training yesterday - his agility on the rubble is incredible. His drive is
outstanding and he seems to get more intense with each training. I need to take
more video so you can see how well he's doing.
Aside from that, I was just thinking about how nice it is to have a dog with no
issues. He's not afraid of anything, he's not handler aggressive, he's not
suspicious/sharp, he's quiet in his crate, he doesn't spin in his crate, he's
never made a mess in his crate, he allows me to trim his nails and clean his
ears without a fuss, he's not a nuisance barker, he accepts any new situation
with absolute ease and comfort and best of all, he wants to work with me and not
against me.
Thanks for sending me this perfect-for-me dog.

Eric (Juice)
you asked for pictures!
Due to the deep snow we now have, I just played around with Juice in the yard
today while Mark was shoveling snow. I did catch a few nice pics of him where
he's not just a blur. Hope all is well with you! Did you get snow too... He's
awesome...!! What more can I say? :o)

Hi Taunya,
Just wanted to let you know that we put Eric on the rubble today to evaluate his
comfort level on the pile. We simply walked around with him off-leash on a
section of it containing concrete rubble and wooden pallets. He showed no
reservations about climbing around on any of it. I didn't think he'd have any
trouble, but had to check as per normal protocol. Also, he seemed ecstatic about
being at training. He definitely knew it was a fun place to be. I'm extremely
happy with how well he did and we plan to start his formal training after the
holidays.

Cela: UPDATE: (10/18/08)
Taunya,
Today she experienced the sweeper for the first time, it was a mild curiosity,
but nothing more. Siche has finally met my daughter and seems to like her a lot,
she'll climb on the couch, lay next to her and start licking her face all over.
Siche likes people but is independent and not afraid of going her own way.
Chasing the ball or eating are her favorite activities by far, followed closely
by climbing ANYTHING to get any where. She has figured out that cabinet knobs
open doors, and if you rush the screen door it will open, we're putting an end
to those things.
Overall she is settling in well and I think as soon as life settles down for me
she and I will do just fine together an start progressing very quickly toward
our ultimate goal of SAR.

Hi Taunya,
He's turned into a
large, hairy beast! :) His nickname is Sasquatch
(like Big Foot)
Attaching one pic, not a great one, but you get the
idea. He's a great guy - really went through an
early growth spurt, so I thought he was going to be
gigantic, but he's slowed down and looks like he'll
be around 85# or so. He is blowing coat right now,
so it's a mess! He is doing very well with training
- taking it slow with him, but he loves the game and
is doing well on the rubble so far. Fabo is also
improving - we took a big step back and just spent
time getting him more comfortable with the rubble,
and it appears to be paying off.

Hey T -- attached is a picture of our girl waiting

Deva is doing well - continuing in our SAR work and I started over again in SchH.
She was too crazy in the protection work and Ivan had her settling down in 3

surgery in June so she should be a real treat to live with while I'm
recuperating :)

A friend took these - Look at Randy's face....do you think he enjoyed working
with Iko????
This system employs shaping & operant behavior so you do a lot of standing there
while the dog learns on his own. Fascinating to watch them trying to figure it
out! Iko relies on his eyes a LOT. He would fix on Randy and try to get at the
ball he was holding - took him a while to learn to mistrust the info from his
ears and eyes and rely solely on what his nose told him. He spent a while trying
to leap over the boxes .

Recent Xamb Pictures
(Posted 10/14/09)
Xamb participated in a
drill at the REACT Center on Volk Field, Tomah
Wisconsin over the weekend. There were multiple
houses and a large rubble pile. The scenario
involved a tornado simulation with both cadaver and
live victims. He’d never been exposed to cadaver
before so I was unsure how he’d handle it. No
reaction at all (interest or aversion), perfect for
a live find USAR dog. He also had never been exposed
to this level of distractions or number of victims.
As this was a training we were ready to simplify and
assure that he was successful however he didn’t need
much help at all. In fact he seems to get annoyed
when I try to help too much. He did much better then
I anticipated. He continues to excel and surprise me
at every turn. Great dog...!!

it and he jumped up on it like a pro. He continues to surprise me (pleasantly)
at every training we go to. He is progressing, almost faster then I'd like him
to due to his young age and physical limits. I'll keep him corralled and give
him time to grow. I have every confidence he'll be ready to go very soon.

Zamb Update
Hi Taunya,
Sending you an update on Zamb, my Gallant son! I ADORE this dog! He has been a
true joy to train and work with and he’s stunning to boot!
We’re in the middle of
our USAR training and he’s coming along. I wanted to send you a couple of photos
of him so you can see how he’s grown up and how he’s doing in his USAR work.
Thanks again for him! He’s just an enthusiastic and willing worker!
The first photo is of
Zamb helping me train a whole new group of handlers (he adores me and would
choose me any day, but when it comes to his job he’ll work for anyone!) and the
second is of him standing on a piece of suspended chain link (about 4’ up in the
air) where he ran up a plank and across the chain link to alert on his victim
and get his reward. As you can see he still has that beautiful, full grip! It’s
like an endorphin shot to him to have that toy in his mouth! lol

USAR training with Zamb
Hey Taunya,
Zamb and I had his first USAR training session this weekend. We drove for 8
hours, stayed at a teammates home with her two dogs and Trained at a
new/unfamiliar location and Zamb did awesome!
We worked on his bark alert, did some agility
with him and did some scent work as well as walked around on the rubble pile
there with him to get him used to that kind of environment. He did super in all
of it and never hesitated to do anything I asked of him!
His rubble walk was really quite impressive.
He even heard one of my teammates up on the pile behind some rocks (I was
standing lower on the rubble pile with Zamb) and he leaped up about 4’ and stood
on a metal tube that was slanted and slick (no way he could Have stood on it!)…I
wasn’t expecting it and was shocked when he did it…I just reached up and held
his butt for him so he wouldn’t slide down and he stood there with his ears up,
looking around trying to figure out if maybe he was supposed to GO to that
person who was talking. I finally talked him into coming down and he turned
sideways and slid off of it into my arms and I set him on the ground. Silly
boy!!!
He’s awesome! He’s really coming into his own
self finally. His adjustment has taken him a bit, but I can see him turning into
a completely different dog than I had the last couple of weeks…much more
confident and outgoing and playful! He’s even starting to flip me his dewclaw
when I call him sometimes. hee hee…he’s a great boy! Thanks for him!
Monica
p.s. he has decided that my little border collie/Kelpie mix female (who is all
of about 15” tall) is his personal play thing!!! J He thinks it’s pretty cool I
bought him his own dog!
